***SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT*** GAVIN’S LATEST PUBLISHED PIECE: COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN OVER THE DECADES OR . . . HAVE YOU BECOME AN “EX” VIA TEXT?

A section from “About” at Beautiful Losers Magazine:

The Beautiful Losers Multi Art Group (BeLoMAG) is an independent collective – a group of artists who grew tired of the banality of the official art world itself, and wanted to jumpstart a revolution.

Our goal is to find, nurture and promote up-and-coming artists who are rejected from the mainstream due to their controversial, alternative, avant-garde nature.

Sounded cool to me!

I would like to personally thank the Co-Founder, Alfonso Colasuonno and Chief Non-Fiction Editor, Annie Bao for welcoming me throughout the process, and for their excellent communication. I highly recommend this publication!

And with that, visit my Published Works page to read the piece.

Comments welcome!

  1. An exceptionally good essay, brother. Super well written and argued.

But my takeaway is that we’re doomed. Is there nothing you can offer that would save us?

If not, can you at least recommend either the “ten best no-tech getaways” for people who need to unplug or cite any rehab facilities for tech addiction. There must be some hope or we will just give up. H

    • Thank you for your thoughts. Much appreciated! Writers know there are many sides to every story. The Anthropocene Era does not need to signal our impending termination here on Earth. To assuage those readers who may also feel as we do (most of the time), here are just a few amazing ventures using advanced technology to not only make the world a better place, to communicate better, but to make us better stewards of this planet—a planet that has given us (and put up with) so much:

      Smithsonian writes about social networking:

      https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/how-technology-makes-us-better-social-beings-28986845/

“There has been a great deal of speculation about the impact of social networking site use on people’s social lives, and much of it has centered on the possibility that these sites are hurting users’ relationships and pushing them away from participating in the world,” Hampton said in a recent press release. He surveyed 2,255 American adults this past fall and published his results in a study last month. “We’ve found the exact opposite—that people who use sites like Facebook actually have more close relationships and are more likely to be involved in civic and political activities.”

      Discover reports on microbes:

      http://discovermagazine.com/2008/sep/06-10-ways-genetically-engineered-microbes-could-help

“Researchers in Silicon Valley may also have found a promising alternative fuel source from a tiny helper. By genetically engineering bacteria and yeast, they were able to convert fatty acids into petroleum replacement products. In this process, the organisms can produce hydrocarbon-based fuels from organic waste. In addition to being renewable, this “Oil 2.0,” as the researchers call it, is also carbon neutral—the microbes use about the same amount of carbon to produce the oil as will be emitted when it burns.”

      Usabilitygeek.com on Wearable Tech:

      https://usabilitygeek.com/ways-wearable-technology-can-improve-our-lives/

“While eating right and staying fit is an important part of your health, there are other wearable technologies that are even more crucial to your health and can even save your life. For example, many elderly patients now wear heart monitors and GPS location devices that alert caregivers when something is wrong or when they’ve wandered off. Certain types of wearable Remote Patient Monitoring devices can even alert caregivers when the person falls. This device allows patients to maintain independence, prevent complications, and minimize personal costs.”

Help Save Nature is a dedicated site showing how tech can save the planet:

      https://helpsavenature.com/advantages-disadvantages-wind-energy

“These were some advantages and disadvantages of wind energy. Wind energy certainly is one of the bright hopes for our future, however, it is also important that governments around the world allocate resources to improve the existing technology. If the implementation of this energy is undertaken on a war-footing, there is every possibility that some of the challenges that we are currently facing can be overcome.”

      MIT and Fab Labs:

      https://www.media.mit.edu/research/groups/0/fab-labs

“‘Fab Lab’ is an abbreviation for Fabrication Laboratory, a group of off-the-shelf, industrial-grade fabrication and electronics tools, wrapped in open-source software and programs. Fab Labs give users around the world the ability to locally conceptualize, design, develop, fabricate, and test almost anything. The engineering capability for design and fabrication at micron length and microsecond time-scales opens up numerous possibilities for innovative solutions to common problems. Since local communities foster this innovation, it can lead to sustainable solutions. As yet, high-end technological solutions have not been addressing problems faced on the local level; therefore, we believe Fab Labs will provide a thriving incubator for local micro-businesses.”

      Jurassic Park!
      Just kidding!
