In Between What Might Have Been and What Has Come to Pass – Post 32 by Gavin Lakin

Time.

The word begs for sagacious commentary, but like most of you I’m exasperated, exhausted, spent. Therefore, music and lyrics will speak for me.

As 2018 closes down for good, travel back over forty years ago to my ’70s playlist to wash out all the bitter tastes of a most desultory year.

Times were not specifically better then; we had issues, but man, the music was! Sure, you can find good music any time, any place, with every generation defining itself by it. As I’ve written before: is it the context that makes a song or that it’s just so damn terrific?

Happy Holidays to everyone and let the good times roll!

Note: Selected songs are arbitrary, all songs are linked to YouTube, I apologize for any lyric mistakes, all photos are from license-free Pixabay, and you are invited to add to the list in the comment space below!

“Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” (Chicago)

time-2720363__480

As I was walking down the street one day
A man came up to me and asked me what the time was that was
on my watch, yeah
And I said
Does anybody really know what time it is
I don’t
Does anybody really care
care
If so I can’t imagine why
about time
We’ve all got time enough to cry
Oh no, no
And I was walking down the street one day
A pretty lady looked at me and said her diamond watch had
stopped cold dead
And I said
Does anybody really know what time it is
I don’t
Does anybody really care
care
If so I can’t imagine why
about time
We’ve all got time enough to cry
Oh no, no
And I was walking down the street one day
Being pushed and shoved by people trying to beat the clock,
oh, so I just don’t know,
I just don’t know
And I said, yes I said
Background Vocal:
People runnin’ everywhere
Don’t know the way to go
Don’t know where I am
Can’t see past the next step
Don’t have to think past the last mile
Have no time to look around
Just run around, run around and think why
Does anybody really know what time it is
I don’t
Does anybody really care
care
If so I can’t imagine why
about time
We’ve all got time enough to die
Oh no, no

“The Times You’ve Come” (Jackson Browne)
In the time we’ve known
That we each are a part of one another
We’ve lost as much as we have won
And as our lives have grown
We have found that it only brings us pain
To hang on to the things that we have done
Still I’ve loved the times you’ve come

When you went away
Taking all that I’d built my false road on
I dropped my life and couldn’t find the pieces
Now you come and go
And it’s hard but I feel my strength returning
We’ll see how far this new road reaches
We’ll see a little more each time we come

Everybody’s gonna tell you it’s not worth it
Everybody’s gotta show you their own pain
You might try to find your way up around it
But the need for love will still remain

Now we’re lying here
So safe in the ruins of our pleasure
Laughter marks the place where we have fallen
And our lives are near
So it wouldn’t occur to us to wonder
Is this the past or the future that is calling

You know I’ve loved these times you’ve come.

“Time” (The Alan Parsons Project)

water-2835845__480

Time
Flowing like a river
Time
Beckoning me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river
To the sea

Goodbye my love
Maybe for forever
Goodbye my love
The tide waits for me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea
To the sea

Till it’s gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore

Goodbye my friend
Maybe for forever
Goodbye my friend
The stars wait for me
Who knows where we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea
To the sea

Till it’s gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore
Forevermore
Forevermore
Forevermore
Forevermore

“Haven’t Got Time For The Pain” (Carly Simon)

All those crazy nights when I cried myself to sleep
Now melodrama never makes me weep anymore
‘Cause I haven’t got time for the pain
I haven’t got room for the pain
I haven’t the need for the pain
Not since I’ve known you

You showed me how, how to leave myself behind
How to turn down the noise in my mind
Now I haven’t got time for the pain
I haven’t got room for the pain
I haven’t the need for the pain
Not since I’ve known you

Suffering was the only thing that made me feel I was alive
Though that’s just how much it cost to survive in this world
‘Til you showed me how, how to fill my heart with love
How to open up and drink in all that white light
Pouring down from the heaven
I haven’t got time for the pain
I haven’t got room for the pain
I haven’t the need for the pain
Not since I’ve known you

“Cat’s In The Cradle” (Harry Chapin)

cat-1790093__480

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin’ ‘fore I knew it, and as he grew
He’d say “I’m gonna be like you, Dad
You know I’m gonna be like you”

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home, Dad
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, “Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let’s play
Can you teach me to throw”, I said “Not today
I got a lot to do”, he said, “That’s ok”
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, “I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m gonna be like him”

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home, Dad
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
“Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while”
He shook his head and said with a smile
“What I’d really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please”

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home son
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then, Dad
You know we’ll have a good time then

I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, “I’d like to see you if you don’t mind”
He said, “I’d love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job’s a hassle and the kids have the flu
But it’s sure nice talking to you, Dad
It’s been sure nice talking to you”

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He’d grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin’ home son
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then, Dad
We’re gonna have a good time then

“Time” (Pink Floyd)

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It’s good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away, across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spell

“Holdin’ On To Yesterday” (Ambrosia)

road-2563427__480

Well I keep holdin’ on to yesterday
I keep holdin’ on enough to say
That I’m wrong

I keep thinkin’ that I’m lonely
But it’s only missing you inside
Days that we were once together
Seems they’ll never come alive

So I keep holdin’ on to yesterday
I keep holdin’ on enough to say
That it’s wrong

Lord I don’t know when I’ll see you
I can’t reach you anymore
If I’d only known I’d need you
Then I’d keep you like before

I keep holdin’ on to yesterday
I keep holdin’ on enough to say
That I’m wrong, wrong, wrong
To keep holdin’ on
My yesterdays have all gone by

“Long Long Time” (Linda Ronstadt)

Love will abide, take things in stride
Sounds like good advice but there’s no one at my side
And time washes clean love’s wounds unseen
That’s what someone told me but I don’t know what it means

Cause I’ve done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I’m gonna love you for a long long time

Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears
I can’t say you hurt me when you never let me near
And I never drew one response from you
All the while you fell all over girls you never knew
Cause I’ve done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think it’s gonna hurt me for a long long time

Wait for the day
You’ll go away
Knowing that you warned me of the price I’d have to pay
And life’s full of flaws
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was
Cause I’ve done everything I know to try and change your mind
And I think I’m gonna miss you for a long long time
Cause I’ve done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I’m gonna love you for a long long time

“Isn’t It Time” (The Babys)

hand-3377114__480

Falling in love was the
Last thing I had on my mind
Holding you is a warmth
That I thought I could never find
(Sitting here all alone)
Just trying to decide
(Whether to go all alone)
Or stay by your side
(Then I stop myself because)
I know I could cry
I just can’t find the answers
To the questions that keep going through my mind
Hey babe
Isn’t it time
(Isn’t time it took time to wait)
(Falling in love could be your mistake)
Isn’t it time
(Isn’t time you took time to wait)
(Falling in love could be your mistake)
I’ve seen visions of someone like you in my life
A love that’s strong reaching out
Holding me through the darkest night
(Sitting here all alone)
Just trying to decide
(Whether to go all alone)
Or stay by your side
(then I stop myself because)
I don’t want to cry
I just can’t find the answers
To the questions that keep going through my mind
Hey babe
Isn’t it time
(Isn’t it time it took time to wait)
(Falling in love could be your mistake)
(Isn’t time you took time to wait)
(Falling in love could be your mistake)
(Isn’t time you took time to wait)
(Falling in love could be your mistake)
I feel a warmth in my heart
And my soul that I never knew
This love affair gives me strength
That I need just to get me through
(Sitting here all alone)
Just wondering why
(Then I stop myself because)
I know I could cry
(Then I think of you)
And everything seems alright
I’ve finally found the answers
To the questions that keep going through my mind
Hey babe
Isn’t it time
(Isn’t time you don’t have to wait)
(Don’t have to wait)
I know it’s time
Ooh yeah
I know it’s time
It must be time
(Don’t have to wait)
(Losing this love could be your mistake)
(Isn’t time you don’t have to wait)
(Don’t have to wait)
It oughta be time
(Isn’t time you don’t have to wait)
(Isn’t time you don’t have to wait)
It must be time
(Don’t have to wait)
(Losing this love could be your mistake)
(Isn’t time you don’t have to wait)
(Isn’t time you don’t have to wait)
(Losin’ this love could be your mistake)
(Isn’t time you don’t have to wait)
It oughta be time

“Time In A Bottle” (Jim Croce)

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save every day till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I’d save every day like a treasure and then
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do, once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty, except for the memory of how
They were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do, once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go through time with

“It’s Going To Take Some Time” (Carole King)

snow-661028__480

It’s going to take some time this time
To get myself in shape
I really fell out of line this time
I really missed the gate

The birds on the telephone line (next time)
Are cryin’ out to me (next time)
And I won’t be so blind next time
And I’ll find some harmony

But it’s going to take some time this time
And I can’t make demands
But like the young trees in the wintertime
I’ll learn how to bend

After all the tears we’ve spent
How could we make amends
So it’s one more round for experience
And I’m on the road again
And it’s going to take some time this time

It’s going to take some time this time
No matter what I’ve planned
And like the young trees in the wintertime
I’ll learn how to bend

After all the tears we’ve spent
How could we make amends
So it’s one more round for experience
And I’m on the road again
And it’s going to take some time this time

“No Time” (The Guess Who)

(No time left for you)
On my way to better things
(No time left for you)
I’ll find myself some wings
(No time left for you)
Distant roads are calling me
(No time left for you)
Mm-da, mm-da, mm-da, mm-da, mm-da

No time for a summer friend
No time for the love you send
Seasons change and so did I
You need not wonder why
You need not wonder why
There’s no time left for you
No time left for you

(No time left for you)
On my way to better things
(No time left for you)
I’ll find myself some wings
(No time left for you)
Distant roads are calling me
(No time left for you)
Mm-day, mm-gay, mm-day, mm-gay, mm-day

No time for a gentle rain
No time for my watch and chain
No time for revolving doors
No time for the killing floor
No time for the killing floor
There’s no time left for you
No time left for you

No time for a summer friend
No time for the love you send
Seasons change and so did I
You need not wonder why
You need not wonder why
There’s no time left for you
No time left for you

No time, no time, no time, no time
No time, no time, no time, no time

I got, got, got, got no time
I got, got, got, got no time
I got, got, got, got no time
No, no, no, no, no, no, no time
No, no, no, no, no, no, no time
I got, got, got, got no time
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no time
I got no time, got no time, got no time, no time, got no time
Got no time, got no time

“Time Waits For No One” (The Stones)

diamond-315560__480

Yes, star crossed in pleasure the stream flows on by
Yes, as we’re sated in leisure, we watch it fly
And time waits for no one, and it won’t wait for me
And time waits for no one, and it won’t wait for me
Time can tear down a building or destroy a woman’s face
Hours are like diamonds, don’t let them waste
Time waits for no one, no favours has he
Time waits for no one, and he won’t wait for me
Men, they build towers to their passing yes, to their fame everlasting
Here he comes chopping and reaping, hear him laugh at their cheating
And time waits for no man, and it won’t wait for me
Yes, time waits for no one, and it won’t wait for me
Drink in your summer, gather your corn
The dreams of the night time will vanish by dawn
And time waits for no one, and it won’t wait for me
And time waits for no one, and it won’t wait for me
No no no, not for me…

“Long Time Gone” (CSN)

It’s been a long time comin’
It’s goin’ to be a long time gone

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long
Appears to be a long time
Yes, a long, long, long, long time before the dawn

Turn turn any corner
Hear you must hear what the people say
You know there’s something that’s goin’ on around here
The surely, surely, surely won’t stand the light of day, no

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long, mmm
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long time before the dawn

Speak out you got to speak out against the madness
You got to speak your mind if you dare
But don’t, no don’t, no, try to get yourself elected
If you do you had better cut your hair, mmm

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long, mmm
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long, long, long time before the dawn

It’s been a long time comin’ (Long time comin’)
It’s goin’ to be a long time gone (Long time gone)

But you know
The darkest hour
Is always, always just before the dawn

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long, long, long time before the dawn

“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (Roberta Flack)
The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the endless skies, my love
To the dark and the endless skies

And the first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command, my love

And the first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy would fill the earth
And last ’til the end of time, my love
And it would last ’til the end of time, my love

The first time ever I saw your face
Your face
Your face
Your face

“Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” (The Allman Brothers)

grey-2868066__480

Last Sunday morning, the sunshine felt like rain.
Week before, they all seemed the same.
With the help of God and true friends, I come to realize
I still had two strong legs, and even wings to fly.

And oh I, ain’t wastin time no more
‘Cause time goes by like hurricanes, and faster things.

Lord, lord Miss Sally, why all your cryin’?
Been around here three long days, you’re lookin’ like you’re dyin’.
Just step yourself outside, and look up at the stars above
Go on downtown baby, find somebody to love.

Meanwhile I ain’t wastin’ time no more
‘Cause time goes by like pouring rain, and much faster things.

You don’t need no gypsy to tell you why
You can’t let one precious day slip by.
Look inside yourself, and if you don’t see what you want,
Maybe sometimes then you don’t,
But leave your mind alone and just get high.

Well by and by, way after many years have gone,
And all the war freaks die off, leavin’ us alone.
We’ll raise our children in the peaceful way we can,
It’s up to you and me brother
To try and try again.

Well, hear us now, we ain’t wastin’ time no more
‘Cause time goes by like hurricanes
Runnin’ after subway trains
Don’t forget the pouring rain.

“Comes A Time” (Neil Young)
Comes a time
when you’re driftin’
Comes a time
when you settle down

Comes a light
feelin’s liftin’
Lift that baby
right up off the ground.

Oh, this old world
keeps spinning round
It’s a wonder tall trees
ain’t layin’ down
There comes a time.

You and I we were captured
We took our souls
and we flew away
We were right
we were giving
That’s how we kept
what we gave away.

Oh, this old world
keeps spinning round
It’s a wonder tall trees
ain’t layin’ down
There comes a time.

“Right Time Of The Night” (Jennifer Warnes)
nature-2571233__480

Sun goes down on a silky day
Quarter moon walking through the Milky Way
Oh, you and me, baby
We could think of something to do

It’s the right time of the night
The stars are winking above
It’s the right time of the night
For making love

No use talking when the shadows fall
Nightbird’s calling and he says it all
Oh, you and me, baby
We could think of something to do

It’s the right time of the night
The stars are winking above
It’s the right time of the night
For making love

I got you and you got me
Tell you, that’s the way my mama always said it should be
I’ll be cruel, you’ll be kind
We’ll be bad, if you don’t mind

It’s the right time of the night
The stars are winking above
It’s the right time of the night
For making love

It’s the right time of the night
The stars are winking above
It’s the right time of the night
For making love

It’s the right time of the night
The stars are winking above
It’s the right time of the night
For making love

“Time Warp” (The Rocky Horror Picture Show)

It’s astounding, time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll
But listen closely, not for very much longer
I’ve got to keep control

I remember doing the Time Warp
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me and the void would be calling
Let’s do the time warp again…
Let’s do the time warp again!

It’s just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
Put your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it’s the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane
Let’s do the Time Warp again!
Let’s do the Time Warp again!

It’s so dreamy, oh fantasy free me
So you can’t see me, no not at all
In another dimension, with voyeuristic intention
Well-secluded, I see all
With a bit of a mind flip
You’re there in the time slip
And nothing can ever be the same
You’re spaced out on sensation, like you’re under sedation
Let’s do the Time Warp again!
Let’s do the Time Warp again!

Well I was walking down the street just a-having a think
When a snake of a guy gave me an evil wink
He shook me up, he took me by surprise
He had a pickup truck and the devil’s eyes
He stared at me and I felt a change
Time meant nothing, never would again
Let’s do the Time Warp again!
Let’s do the Time Warp again!

It’s just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
Put your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it’s the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane
Let’s do the Time Warp again!
Let’s do the Time Warp again!

“Wasted Time” (Eagles)

leaf-2818952__480

Well, baby, there you stand
With your little head down in your hand

Oh, my God, you can’t believe
It’s happening again
Your baby’s gone,
And you’re all alone
And it looks like the end.

And you’re back out on the street.
And you’re tryin’ to remember.

How do you start it over?
You don’t know if you can.
You don’t care much
For a stranger’s touch,
But you can’t hold your man.

You never thought you’d be alone
This far down the line
And I know what’s been on your mind
You’re afraid it’s all been wasted time

The autumn leaves have got you thinking
About the first time that you fell
You didn’t love the boy too much, no, no,
You just loved the boy too well, well, well.

So you live from day to day,
And you dream about tomorrow

And the hours go by like minutes
And the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something
To make them go away

I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind
From wonderin’ what I left behind
And from worrying ’bout this wasted time

Another love has come and gone
And the years keep rushing on

I remember what you told me
Before you went out on your own,
“Sometimes to keep it together,
We got to leave it alone.”

So you can get on with your search, baby,
And I can get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find
That it wasn’t really wasted time

“Year Of The Cat” (Al Stewart)

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime

She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
Don’t bother asking for explanations
She’ll just tell you that she came

In the year of the cat

She doesn’t give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears

By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There’s a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, “I feel my life
Just like a river running through”

The year of the cat

Well, she looks at you so coolly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what’s waiting inside

The year of the cat

Well morning comes and you’re still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you’ve thrown away your choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on

But the drumbeat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometime you’re bound to leave her
But for now you’re going to stay

In the year of the cat
Year of the cat

“The Long And Winding Road” (The Beatles)

black-and-white-3864280__480

The long and winding road, that leads, to your door
Will never disappear, I’ve seen that road before
It always leads me here, lead me to your door
The wild and windy night, that the rain, washed away
Has left a pool of tears, crying for the day
Why leave me standing here, let me know the way

Many times I’ve been alone, and many times I’ve cried
Any way you’ll never know, the many ways I’ve tried
And still they lead me back, to the long winding road
You left me standing here a long long time ago
Don’t leave me waiting here, lead me to your door

But still they lead me back to the long winding road
You left me standing here, a long long time ago
Don’t keep me waiting here (Don’t keep me wait), lead me to your door
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

“Seasons” (Dave Mason)

Seasons come, seasons go
That’s the time that our love grows
You and I want to know
Rivers dry and love will flow

Will our love come in the middle of summer?
Will our love come in the night?
Will our love come in the middle of sunshine?
But tonight…

Summer comes waves of blue
Hearts of gold, sunshine through
Winters cold brings me fear
Look for us, we’ll be here

Will our love come in the middle of summer?
Will our love come in the night?
Will our love come in the middle of sunshine?
But tonight…

Life grows old, day by day
Dreams grow stronger, fade away
Love for sure shows the way
Summer warmth and winter’s day

Will our love come in the middle of summer?
Will our love come in the night?
Will our love come in the middle of sunshine?
But tonight…

“The Last Time I Saw Richard” (Joni Mitchell)

insect-1759199__480

The last time I saw Richard was Detroit in ’68
And he told me all romantics meet the same fate someday
Cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark cafe
“You laugh,” he said, “You think you’re immune,
Go look at your eyes, they’re full of moon
You like roses and kisses and pretty men to tell you
All those pretty lies, pretty lies
When you gonna realize they’re only pretty lies
Only pretty lies, just pretty lies”

He put a quarter in the Wurlitzer
And he pushed three buttons and the thing began to whirr
And a bar maid came by in fishnet stockings and a bow tie
And she said, “Drink up now it’s gettin’ on time to close”
“Richard you haven’t really changed,” I said,
“It’s just that now you’re romanticizing some pain that’s in your head
You got tombs in your eyes, but the songs you punched are dreaming
Listen, they sing of love so sweet, love so sweet
When you gonna go get yourself back on your feet?
Oh love can be so sweet, love so sweet.”

Richard got married to a figure skater
And he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percolator
And he drinks at home now most nights with the TV on
And all the house lights left up bright
I’m gonna blow this damn candle out
I don’t want nobody comin’ over to my table
I got nothing to talk to anybody about
All good dreamers pass this way some day
Hidin’ behind bottles in dark cafes, dark cafes
Only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings and fly away
Only a phase, these dark cafe days.

“Sixty Years On” (Elton John)

Who’ll walk me down to church when I’m sixty years of age
When the ragged dog they gave me has been ten years in the grave
And senorita play guitar, play it just for you
My rosary has broken and my beads have all slipped through

You’ve hung up your great coat and you’ve laid down your gun
You know the war you fought in wasn’t too much fun
And the future you’re giving me holds nothing for a gun
I’ve no wish to be living sixty years on

Yes I’ll sit with you and talk let your eyes relive again
I know my vintage prayers would be very much the same
And Magdelena plays the organ, plays it just for you
Your choral lamp that burns so low when you are passing through

And the future you’re giving me holds nothing for a gun
I’ve no wish to be living sixty years on

“Redman” (Rare Bird)

nature-2431458__480

Brave and proud, as all the village vowed

That the land would belong to our sons

We pledged our name, but then the wagons came

And we ran from the sound of the guns

Fugitives across the land, with empty hearts and empty heads

And all the troubles underneath the sun

Life was all we had to give

But not the life we used to live

With all the triumph over now, and done

Sick and weak

We came to Bitter Creek in the year i became twenty five

The young and old

We faced the bitter cold

In the last grave event of our lives

Underdogs in every place

And every line on every face

Remained to tell of land that we had lost

Leaning on the only hope

We laid with elk and antelope

To fight the killing fever of the frost

Robbed of the right, to be one with the white

It’s the end of the fight for the Redman

Gone is the grace and the pride from his face

It’s the end of the race for the Redman

“Don’t Stop” (Fleetwood Mac)
If you wake up and don’t want to smile
If it takes just a little while
Open your eyes and look at the day
You’ll see things in a different way

Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow
Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here
It’ll be here better than before
Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone

Why not think about times to come?
And not about the things that you’ve done?
If your life was bad to you
Just think what tomorrow will do

Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow
Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here
It’ll be here better than before
Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone

All I want is to see you smile
If it takes just a little while
I know you don’t believe that it’s true
I never meant any harm to you

Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow
Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here
It’ll be here better than before
Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone

Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow
Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here
It’ll be here better than before
Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone

Don’t you look back
Don’t you look back
Don’t you look back
Don’t you look back

“Long Ago And Far Away” (James Taylor)

broken-2571603__480

Long ago, a young man sits and plays his waiting game.
But things are not the same it seems as in such tender dreams.
Slowly passing sailing ships and Sunday afternoon.
Like people on the moon I see are things not meant to be.

Where do those golden rainbows end? Why is this song so sad?
Dreaming the dreams I’ve dreamed my friend, loving the love I love
to love is just a word I’ve heard when things are being said.
Stories my poor head has told me cannot stand the cold.
And in between what might have been and what has come to pass,
a misbegotten guess alas and bits of broken glass.

Where do your golden rainbows end? Why is this song I sing so sad?
Dreaming the dreams I dream my friend, loving the love I love to love to love to love.

“Love Me Tomorrow” (Boz Scaggs)

You say that you love me anyway
But I know its not in your eyes
You say you can take it night and day
But I know its an alibi

Dejon where did we go wrong
You said that you’d be mine
Till the end of time
Love me tomorrow
Love me tomorrow
Love me tomorrow
Love me tomorrow

I say its a sad sort of play
When you never get to my lines
You say that I’m better off this way
But I know it’s all in your mind

Dejon where did we go wrong
You said that you’d be mine
Till the end of time
Love me tomorrow
Love me tomorrow
Forget all your sorrow
Love me tomorrow

Dejon where did we go wrong
You said that you’d be mine
Till the end of time
Love me tomorrow
Love me tomorrow
Forget all your sorrow
Love me tomorrow

“Turn The Page” (Bob Seger)

book-933280__480 (1)

On a long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha
You can listen to the engine moanin’ out its one-note song
You can think about the woman, or the girl you knew the night before

But your thoughts will soon be wandering the way they always do
When you’re riding sixteen hours and there’s nothing much to do
And you don’t feel much like riding, you just wish the trip was through

Say, here I am, on a road again
There I am, up on the stage
Here I go, playing the star again
There I go, turn the page

Well, you walk into a restaurant, strung-out from the road
And you feel the eyes upon you as you’re shaking off the cold
You pretend it doesn’t bother you but you just want to explode

Most times you can’t hear ’em talk, other times you can
All the same old clichés: “Is that a woman or a man?”
And you always seem outnumbered, you don’t dare make a stand

Here I am, on a road again
There I am, up on the stage
Here I go, playing the star again
There I go, turn the page

Out there in the spotlight you’re a million miles away
Every ounce of energy you try to give away
As the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play

Later in the evening as you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers ringin’ in your head
You smoke the day’s last cigarette, remembering what she said

Ah Here I am, on a road again
There I am, up on the stage
Here I go, playing the star again
There I go, turn the page

Ah, here I am, on a road again
There I am, up on the stage
Here I go, playing the star again
There I go, there I go
